”The way to get started is quit talking and begin doing.” – Walt Disney
I came across this quote recently, and was grateful that it entered my stream of consciousness at a time that I needed the reminder. See, for the past couple of years, I have been working towards a goal, trying to accomplish multiple things simultaneously.
The goal: to write some songs that I would use to promote playing live again, and possibly release for streaming. A conceptually simple juggling act. The short version of this I’ve shared with most folks is just “I’m writing an album”.
Write songs, share them, play live; simple in design, simple to execute. So I began to toss balls.
But it’s easy to get distracted with the demands life makes of us, and those outside demands make each ball you use a separate juggle on its own. Kind of like a juggle of juggles, or something cosmic like that.
It’s OK, you can judge, I’ve only just had my first sip of the day, the brain doesn’t know caffeine’s jump started the process yet.
Songwriting is a ball that is always a juggle, as sometimes the creative faucet flows strong, but sometimes it’s only a trickle. Additionally, creative changes occur during the writing process, sometimes frequently, let alone trying to arrange for multiple instruments. But ball one is in the air, I have songs to share.
The second ball got tossed a couple of months ago as I began playing live again at a regularly scheduled local jam session. It’s been a while since I last played out, and I was a little nervous, but I quickly learned that playing live is just like riding a bike. Glad to be back in the saddle.
The third ball, sharing and promotion, has been slow despite the numerous thoughts and plans pore into accomplishing this goal. I know that I have spent a lot of time planning this site, and I don’t regret it. But too much time has been spent talking about it.
So it’s time to start doing, to toss the third ball into the air. So I offer this new juggle that the balls are all in the air, I can focus on actually mastering my juggle.
Happy Holidays to all!
